All Thy Name - The Head, Godhead
God has one name. "Names" of God is not in scripture. It is called "all thy name" (Psalm 138:2). He just has a really long name. Studying his name will prove that God is one and that the same Lord God of the Old Testament is the same Lord Jesus of the New Testament. There are no three separate persons of God (Hebrews 1:3 "...express image of his person..."
Jesus is referred to as the capital "H" Head once in scripture.
Colossians 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
This is the same chapter that he is called the Godhead.
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
This whole chapter should be read. But what is in context here are those that do not hold the Head but rather hold to their traditions.
- Beware of philosophy, deceit, tradition of men, rudiments of the word (Col 2:8)
- Let not man judge you in meat, drink, holy day, new moon, or sabbath (verse 16)
- Let no man beguile you in voluntary humility, worshipping of angels (verse 18)
- dead to rudiments of the word (verse 20)
- commandments and doctrines of men (verse 22) (Compare Matthew 15:9; Mark 7:7)
The head is the head. There is nothing above the head. The head does not answer to any other part of the body. And in scripture, the head is the absolute and final authority in a governed body.
Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
God gives us the understanding of his power in a marriage relationship. In a marriage, the husband is the ruler. He is the head and there is no authority over him in the marriage. The same for Christ and the church.
II Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
Most of the time that Jesus is referenced by "the head" or "the Head" it is in context with the church (Ephesians 5:23, etc.). However, his Godhead power cannot stop there.
Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
He is the head and power over all power. This has to be the same God as the Old Testament LORD because no two people can be head over all....There would be two heads (consider the beast's 7 heads in Revelation 17:7,9-10).
I Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.
This OT passage directly connects the LORD to the Lord Jesus Christ. They are the same person. (For further prove compare Deut. 6:4 with Mark 12:29 and then look at Deut. 6:16 and Luke 4:12.)
I Corinthians 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
The very first mention of the capital "F" Father is in a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ, the son.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Notice how this verse is worded (God's perfect English). He calls what would seem to be 5 names "his name". Also notice the capital "F" Father is a name for the son. And, finally, notice the government is on his shoulders...what sits on the shoulders...the Head! (I think of the saying, "you got a good head on your shoulders")
JOHN CHAPTER 5 EXPLAINS THE (GOD)HEAD AUTHORITY WELL
The Son can do nothing of himself
- John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel....
I Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
All judgment given to the Son
- 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
Whosoever believeth in the Father hath everlasting life!! (Cp. John 3:16)
- 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
The Father gave the authority to the Son (the Head)...(this also answers Luke 20:2)
- 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Jesus comes in his Father's name....JESUS
- 43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
There is no power but of God (Romans 13:1). Jesus Christ, the Head, got his power from God because he is GOD.
Jesus can do nothing without the Father because they are one. John 6:57 says he lives by the Father (obviously not by bread and water if you read Luke 4:2 where he fasted for 40 days straight!). The fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus. He became flesh and received even more power.
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Jesus Christ had to be excepted from the Father (I Cor 15:28)...meaning the Word was made flesh (John 1:1), in order to purchase sinners to reconcile all things to himself (Col 1:18). That is having all power, even having the keys to death and hell (Rev 1:18) in which the devil had prior to Jesus' death (Heb 2:14).
Jesus now has the preeminence over all things. And this is why his name is the Head. This is in short, and there is much to be spoken about this. Lord willing I will be able to record this study in a video which will have more details about this blessed revelation in God's word. But for now please meditate on the name of God, the Head. And let's discuss the scriptures in the comments! God bless!
