Are Head Coverings Christian?

NO. The bottom line is WE HAVE NO SUCH CUSTOM.

I Corinthians 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

I have noticed that the cultic people love to keep people in bondage with I Corinthians 11:1-16 where they imply that a head covering is an ordinance of the church when it clearly is not!

I Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

Then in the very next verse..."BUT"...

I Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know...

Paul is praising them for keeping the ordinances BUT from verses 3-16 in this chapter he is referring a custom that needs addressing. NOT an ordinance.

I Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

To have a vail or other head covering in scripture is a cultural thing. This is perhaps why today it is mistaken for an ordinance. Since mankind loves to replace God's word with traditions and philosophies (Colossians chapter 2). There are places in scripture that a physical head covering is mentioned (Isaiah 47:2 maybe Numbers 5:18). But that still does not take away from the plainness of scripture when it tells us, "we have no such custom".

TO UNCOVER SOMEONE'S HEAD MEANS TO SHAVE HAIR OFF

Job 1:20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
Leviticus 10:6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people...

Compare scripture with scripture and you can see what God means when one "uncovers" their head. That is why I said that MAYBE it was a vail or other covering in Numbers 5:18. Although, most likely, it was her hair being shaved off.

I Corinthians 11:6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

(P.S. Better not make your husband jealous to where he is accusing you of being defiled with another man or else you get shaved! That's what Numbers chapter 5 is all about...go read it)

WE HAVE LIBERTY IN CHRIST

It is most upsetting to see how so many people get deceived about needing the head covering for salvation, or to be right with God (Mennonites, Hutterites, Amish, Islamic, etc.) when the scriptures plainly say that it is a custom, not an ordinance, and that we have liberty in Christ.

II Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
I Corinthians 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

It is very plain in scripture. To anyone out there who is struggling with this topic, please let the scriptures speak for themselves. The only way you get confused is when you imply things to the passage that is not there.

II Corinthians 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:

IT BECOMES A SALVATION ISSUE

If you continue to struggle with feeling like you absolutely NEED the head covering for salvation or to otherwise be right with God, then please consider if you are truly saved.

I Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

If you just cannot accept the plainness of scripture when it says that we do not have the custom of head coverings, then please consider that you do not have the Spirit of God. Those that do not have the Spirit cannot understand the spiritual things.

John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

That is why they look towards the physical head covering. because that is something they can DO. It becomes a work of the flesh in which they take comfort in knowing that they have done something rather then allowing God to be the one that saves.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

The head covering can become a boastful matter where a bonnet "covered" person looks on another who is not wearing the "covering" and thinks that she is better or more spiritual then her. This is not of GOD.

Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again. That is how we are saved. Not by any work that we do!

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

I pray for those who are trusting in themselves to come to God for their covering.

Isaiah 30:1 WOE to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
