How Long Should a Widow Mourn?
Scripture teaches it is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting, and, sorrow is better than laughter.
Ecclesiastes 7:1 KJV A GOOD name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth. 2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
A widow many never find "closure" until the day God wipes her tears off her face in Revelation 21:4.
Revelation of John 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Either a widow mourns for her husband until the day she dies, or she gets remarried and can continue bearing children and keeping house.
I Timothy 5:11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
I Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
The scriptures say a widow is happier if she continues mourning but that a widow has liberty to remarry, in the Lord (I Corinthians 7:8-9, 39-40).
I Corinthians 7:8 KJV I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
I Corinthians 7:39 KJV The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
