The Deceitful Heart

The Deceitful Heart
Jeremiah 17:9 ¶ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Have you ever been doing your daily tasks and thought to yourself, "Why did I just think that? I don't even have a desire to do that." I've thought this often when my heart tries to deceive me. To deceive yourself is to think something is "ok" or "good" when it is not. When you don't know the truth or if something is right to do your heart will often say:

  • I think so
  • I believe so
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

The heart will deceive you about sin. It will say, "It's only a little bit" "It will feel so good" "It's only one time". The heart will make things up to get you to sin against God. The heart will even remember those filthy words you heard from other people or the words you used to say in your old man life.

Be not deceived, brethren, the wages of sin is death. You will corrupt yourself if you continue in sin after salvation. This is not the will of God for you.

1 Thessalonians 4:3, 7

3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

How often do you remember that your heart is deceitful? We should remember this often because then we can fight against it.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

In this video study I shew from scripture:

  • The heart is deceitful about sin
  • The heart is deceitful amongst the brethren

The phrases you want to look for in scripture regarding the deceitful heart are

  • "think himself"
  • "trust to himself"
  • "wise in your/his own conceit(s)"
  • "Be not deceived"

These things are grave and sober. The heart will deceive you very quickly, it only takes a second. Take heed to yourself, brethren, and don't let your thoughts get away from you. Take them into captivity and obey the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Ephesians 4:21-24

21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
