Widow's Day 2026

Widow's Day (June 23rd) has been recognized as "a day of action" by the United Nations since 2010 but it first took place in 2005. Although the UN is very wicked, this day still brings attention to the widows which is a good thing according to scripture. It is a day to bring awareness to the afflictions, injustices, and poverty widows suffer. I have some strange observed days on my store-bought calendars, but I have yet to find Widow's Day on any of them. What a SHAME!

Is "Administrative Professionals" Day more important than Widow's Day??

I did not know this day existed until I had studied widowhood awhile back. Why?? It is because, since ancient times, the widows have been afflicted, neglected, and forgotten. But God has not forgotten the widows. There are so many passages, commandments, and instructions concerning the widow in the Holy Bible.

Psalm 68:4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. 5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

FOR THE SAINT

I encourage you to use this day to find a widow to relieve. It is pure in God's sight.

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Also, take this day to consider what a widow has to suffer.

WHAT A WIDOW SUFFERS

A widow has a three-fold suffering in this world. ):

  1. She Suffers the Mourning for Her Husband

Whether he lost his life in war (most common), an accident, declining of health or any other way a widow has lost part of her flesh!

Mark 10:8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

It is God that makes a husband and wife one flesh, that's deep and spiritual! When someone this close to you dies it is not easy. I once had a older widow tell me how that when she is at home the silence is deafening. It was a constant reminder of her husbands absence. Sleeping alone, looking over at his chair, and other day to day normal things would bring the widow to tears. A widow will never heal from the sorrow of losing her husband as long as she lives. But God will wipe her tears away one day (Revelation 22:4).

Isaiah 60:20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

So, please, if you speak with a widow, do not expect her to ever be over, or healed from the death of her husband. Although if she chooses to remarry, the joy of her new husband and children may take away some of the pain. But even still...

I Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. 40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
  1. She Suffers Poverty

A widow cannot get a job out in the world like man can. If she does get a job she will be underpaid (like most women in the work force). She has had her husband providing for her for however long that they were married, so she is not capable of making a living on her own. That is why the family or church has the charge to provide for a widow indeed because woman working outside of the home causes the word of God to be blasphemed (Titus 2:3-5).

I Timothy 5:3 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God....9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,

A widow is not able to provide for her and her children. In many countries widowed women are forced to give their children up for adoption because of this. God has given commandments for this reason. A widow should never come to the point of giving her children over if God's children are obeying his commandments.

Deuteronomy 24:19 ¶ When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. 20 When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. 21 When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
I Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel...16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
Mark 12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: 44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
  1. She Suffers Legal Matters/Injustices

The widows in the West are a tiny bit different then the widows in undeveloped countries. Here in America, we have marriage licenses and property deeds that help a widow have access to things like the property and bank accounts of her late husband. However, in undeveloped more tribal nations the suffering of a widow in this area is even MORE! A widow is subject to having land stolen from her. She is often declined access to the bank or inheritance in her community. In some places she is thrust out from the entire village. Many of them are left to die in the wilderness or jungle. Even though the countries laws may prohibit such treatment, the laws are rarely enforced. A widow's land, children, and all she owns would be given to another, to whom she is forced to marry. It is quite horrible. Read this article to understand more about how widows are treated as the atricles puts it, "around the globe" but scripture says, across the "breadth of the earth".

As saints, we should be looking for, praying for and pleading for the widows.

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

TO THE WIDOWS

Dear widows, I am so sorry that you go through what you go through on a day to day basis. ): It is truly sorrowful. And your sorrow in this life might never end. But there is a hope to come. Look to the Lord Jesus, one day he will wipe your tears away.

Revelation of John 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

We are approved as the ministers of God by being sorrowful but yet alway rejoicing, and poor yet making many rich. Keep your eyes on Jesus and never stop serving him.

II Corinthians 6:4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses...10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things

God still has need of you here on earth. Make sure to use your time wisely.

I Timothy 5:5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.

Please keep us in your prayers! God hears the prayers of the widows.

Luke 18:1 AND he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Let God be your hope and stay. If you need anything at all please reach out to any one of us on the contact page. May God bless and keep you.

Proverbs 15:25 The Lord will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
