Preaching Is Prophesying

Preaching Is Prophesying

Yes when anyone begins to preach the word of God they are prophesying.

And here is what it is to prophesy as defined in scripture...

1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

The fact that prophets are preachers according to the word of God, is easy to be understood within the word of God. Just consider all of 1 Corinthians 14. The whole chapter is giving instructions for prophesying but not preaching. And if prophesying is different then preaching, then we have no explicit instructions for preaching in the church within scripture.
Furthermore as there be some who say a woman can never preach, these have only assumed by their own imaginings that a woman is never a prophet in scripture. And or they make a distinction between a prophet and a preacher that is not from the word of God. So to say a woman can never preach is only adding to the word of God. Notwithstanding, yes a woman should not preach or teach in a church gathering, neither is she permitted by the word of God to be the pastor, bishop, or deacon of any congregation according to the word of God. So do not mix up what is said here.

In 1 Corinthians for example when it tells us a woman is to remain silent in the churches as it is written in 1 Corinthians 14:34. This is only after the two times in the chapter it says "come together in one place" & "when ye come together".

1 Corinthians 14:23 KJV  If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV  How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

And so the point is that a woman having to remain silent is instructions for when we come together into one place.
The same sort who take 1 Corinthians 14:34 out of context will bring up with 1 Timothy 2:12 saying a woman is to always be silent and is never allowed to preach or teach.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 KJV  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.  (35)  And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

1 Timothy 2:11-12 KJV  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.  (12)  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

The authority in context to 1 Timothy 2:12 is the Bishop and Deacon in the church, as laid out in the following chapter. But more importantly her husband also having authority over here which is what is in the context (1 Timothy 2:11-15 KJV). And this is the law from the beginning going back to Genesis 3:16. Nevertheless it is still said without care for context that the woman should never preach or teach because of 1 Timothy 2:12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. But that would directly contradict Titus 2:3-5: (which those who say a woman can not teach imply extra matters as to how when and where she can preach to the passage in Titus 2:3-5 that are not expressly given in the word of God.) And so when comparing scripture with scripture it is conclusive that a woman should not teach in the church WHEN YE COME TOGETHER AS THE CHURCH.

And aside from this point of a woman being able to preach and teach outside of when the church is come together. Men that think themselves to have the Spirit of God should take heed to what is said.
You are a prophet of the Lord Jesus Christ, the mighty God. And this is no light thing. This is a matter that comes with responsibility and we all should be very grave and sober about the matter of us each in Christ being prophets, now having the Spirit of God in us... It will be covered again... but pause now and read Numbers 11:29 and compare to Acts 2:17 and consider just what it is to be a prophet of the Lord. You do not want to teach falsely and be a false prophet.

Is a woman a prophet? YES a woman that is born again and speaks the word of God is a prophet. And she has every right by the power of God just as a man to speak and teach the word of God, being a teacher of good things as it is written in Titus 2:3. Yet more direct to the passage in 1 Corinthians 14, consider chapter 11 of 1 Corinthians also as it says...

1 Corinthians 11:4-5 KJV  Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.  (5)  But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

so a woman can pray and prophesy as a man does but with having her head covered: (The head covering is her hair even in the context of the very verse stating "that is even all one as if she were shaven" so no need to put a bonnet cap over your God given covering ladies.)
And also to mention that the spiritual gifts are not just to men in the church but all whom the Spirit of God is sealed within. They are the gifts of the Spirit. And with these we are told the following which comes before the instructions given for when we are gathered together.

1 Corinthians 14:1 KJV  Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

And lets not forget that there was a man who was an evangelist named Philip, he had four daughters which did prophesy in Acts 21:9. Paul and company abode with him and tarried there many days, and they did not rebuke him or his daughters all that time. And this was well after Paul had gone to and wrote to the Corinthians.

Acts 21:8-10 KJV  And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.  (9)  And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.  (10)  And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

Prophets speak unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort as it is written in 1 Corinthians 14:3. So after having seen Acts 21:9. Are Philips daughters not allowed to exhort or edify men? Lets think sober on this and look at some more definitions of what it is to prophesy in scripture.

  • Prophets preach according to Nehemiah 6:7
  • Prophets teach according to Isaiah 9:15 (if even in a bad context here, still the matter is so; but for a good context also consider Proverbs 31:1)
  • Prophets speak of things to come according to Matthew 13:14 (and many other examples with the coming of Christ)
  • Prophets speak of things from times past according to John 4:17-19
  • And as stated already twice before here, and now a third time. Prophets speak to edification, exhortation, and comfort according to 1 Corinthians 14:3
Nehemiah 6:7 KJV  And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

Isaiah 9:15 KJV  The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.
(Proverbs 31:1 KJV  The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.)

Matthew 13:14 KJV  And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

John 4:17-19 KJV  The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:  (18)  For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.  (19)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV  But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

In all of this the spirit of the prophets, all who preach the word of God, they are subject to the prophets!

1 Corinthians 14:32-33 KJV  And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.  (33)  For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

And no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. So when we speak and preach the word of God... what is spoken is subject to the word of God rather it is true or not.

2 Peter 1:20-21 KJV  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  (21)  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Do you have the Spirit of God? has not the Lord poured out his spirit upon all flesh according to the scriptures? Does this not include the women as well as the men?

Acts 2:17-18 KJV  And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:  (18)  And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

And in this we see a prayer of Moses answered. Who would say otherwise???

Numbers 11:29 KJV  And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

So consider the next time that you preach and or, if only in your own mind, speak of the word of God. Beware that we who speak the word of God are subject unto the word of God. And woe unto them who are false prophets speaking lies not according to the word or will of God.
